Professor Simon Barnard has acted as expert witness in over 70 cases. He has prepared expert reports and presented evidence in court and tribunals on the instructions of solicitors acting for the General Optical Council, the Association of Optometrists, multiple corporate bodies, individual optometrists and patients, both for the prosecution and defence. 

Most of the cases Professor Barnard has acted in relate to alleged undiagnosed glaucoma, retinal detachment, ocular tumour or amblyopia. He has also provided evidence relating to standards of clinical record keeping, alleged inappropriate behaviour towards a patient and a case of a road traffic accident allegedly caused by an insect flying into the driver's eye.

Mr Alex Levit's area of particular expertise in medico-legal cases is in the fields of contact lenses and corneal conditions including keratoconus, Laser and other refractive surgeries, general ocular pathologies with particular experience in cases of open and acute and chronic narrow / closed angle glaucomas.

Subject to capacity, both Professor Barnard and Mr Levit will usually prepare an expert report within 28 days although, if more urgent preparation is required, a shorter time scale may be possible.
